01
Insert today's date
Windows
Ctrl + ;
Mac
⌃ Ctrl + ;

Why it matters: Every report header, every status update, every "as of" line. Stops you typing "03/06/2026" wrong and accidentally putting US format in a UK file.

02
Lock a cell reference in a formula
Windows
F4
Mac
⌘ Cmd + T

Why it matters: Press the shortcut while editing a formula to add the $ signs (e.g. A1 becomes $A$1). Stops your formula breaking when you drag it down the column. The single most-used shortcut in corporate finance.

03
Toggle filters on/off
Windows
Ctrl + Shift + L
Mac
⌘ Cmd + Shift + F

Why it matters: No more hunting through the Data tab. Click any cell in a table, hit the shortcut, instant filter arrows on every column header. Hit it again to remove them.

04
Convert range to a proper Table
Windows
Ctrl + T
Mac
⌘ Cmd + T

Why it matters: Turns a plain data range into a structured Excel Table. Formulas auto-fill down. New rows get formatted automatically. Charts and pivots update when you add data. Do this on every dataset, always.

05
Paste values only (no formatting)
Windows
Ctrl + Shift + V
Mac
⌘ Cmd + Shift + V

Why it matters: Copying from an email, a browser, or another workbook drags in fonts, colours and broken formulas. Paste values strips it all to clean numbers and text. Saves you from "why is half my report red?" at 5pm on a Friday.
